Chapter 9 - The Detective Who Looked Away

Former Detective Paul Renner sat across from Brooks with his attorney beside him.

"I didn't take a bribe."

"I didn't say you did."

Brooks placed the file on the table.

Kessler received money.

The marina manager received money.

A private laboratory received money.

Renner's name appeared nowhere.

"What did you miss?" Brooks asked.

Renner looked tired.

"Vivian."

"You accepted that she wasn't there."

"Grant said she left before launch."

"Why didn't you verify it?"

"I tried. My captain said the marina camera was broken."

"It wasn't."

"I know."

"Did you believe Caroline fell?"

Renner stared at his hands.

"No."

Brooks went still.

"Then why close the case?"

"The sedative result was minimized. My captain said there wasn't enough. I was six months from retirement."

"Was there enough?"

Renner's voice cracked.

"Yes."

It was not a murder confession.

It was something more common.

Cowardice.

The same thing that had filled Grant's reception hall while Lily scrubbed the floor.

People seeing enough.

Doing too little.

Renner agreed to testify.

His former captain, Dale Warren, was found in Florida.

Warren denied interfering.

Then agents showed him a payment from a Mercer real-estate company to his son's business three weeks after Caroline died.

He asked for counsel.

Vivian then requested a deal.

She offered to lead police to the red thermos.

In exchange, she wanted reduced charges.

Grant heard about her offer and demanded his own meeting.

Rebecca asked Brooks, "Which one is telling the truth?"

"Probably neither."

Vivian led investigators to a storage unit under her maiden name.

Inside were foundation records, Caroline's missing laptop, a white coat, and the red thermos.

It had been scrubbed.

Under the rubber seal, technicians still found traces of the sedative.

Then they opened Caroline's laptop.

On the desktop was a document titled:

IF GRANT SAYS I FELL.

The final entry had been written the morning she died.

If Grant says I fell, ask why Vivian was there.
